5 Fall Trends to Love

This year’s fall trends offer many things that are easy for women of any age to wear. Skip the fishnet and glitter (yes, those are en vogue) and go right to dark floral prints, chunky knits, and ruffled Victorian-era necklines. Cozy up to mid-length skirts and dresses, waist-cinching outerwear and everything red.

Red Hot

Designers didn’t dabble in fall’s hottest color: They went all out. Altuzarra used shades of crimson from head to toe. Givenchy exhibited a retrospective entirely in a Heinz-like hue. Fendi, Jill Sander, and Victoria Beckham sent monochromatic looks blazing down the runway. But as with Sriracha, we think a little goes a long way. An easy way to incorporate the color? Pick it up in a coat ( try a delicious shade from cherry to plum) or wear it under a black coat in an everyday top. Be bold in daring dress or let your shoes and accessories be the statement-makers by swapping your go-tos for rose-colored earrings, bags, and boots. (Don’t forget to update your exercise look with a fiery pair of kicks, too.)

Victorian Values

History repeats itself on the catwalk, too. Ornate collars of centuries past graced the necks of models at Erdem, Valentino, Ann Demeulemeester, and Frame. Wearing the look off the runway is surprisingly easy. White dress shirts, feminine frocks, and classic turtlenecks have all been updated with ruffles around the neckline. Pair with simple separates and unfussy footwear.

She’s Come Undone

Designers updated wardrobe staples, giving tailored basics an artful, deconstructed look. Asymmetrical sleeves and hemlines, unexpected details, and layered medleys of textiles were seen at Proenza Schouler, Burberry, Self Portrait, and many others. While the bolder side of the look, like Ports 1961’s one-shoulder suit, might not rank on the real-world wearability scale, subtler twists on classics are equally cool and easy to throw on and go.

R13 wool-blend sleeveless wrap coat, $1,495.
Alice + Olivia Tate wide-neck button-front shirtdress, $285.
Rosie Assoulin Swaggy jacket, $2,295.
Halston Heritage asymmetric satin shirtdress, $325.

Stuart Weitzman frayed satin sandal, $425.

Tea-Length Party

Minis and maxis have had their fair share of the limelight. Now midlength skirts and dresses are having their moment after swaying and sashaying down the fall runways of Jason Wu, Lela Rose, Hrabal Gurung, and more. The hemline is feminine, flattering, and modern, whether it comes in an autumnal floral print or solid knit. Skirts can be paired with form-fitting basics (bodysuits are perfect) or equally ladylike blouses, tucked in for an hourglass shape. Pair with sandals, pumps, booties, and even knee-high boots (yes, you can!).

Luisa Beccaria floral dress, $2,504.
Lela Rose Ottoman lace-hem dress, $1,595.
J.W. Anderson drape wool skirt, $600.
Altuzarra Burnet knit skirt, $695.
Rachel Comey Welcome midi dress, $448.
Victoria Beckham ribbed dress, $1,995.
Ulla Johnson Hilda leather skirt, $990.
