Summer makes us think of sun, sand, and shoe shopping. With so many fun options online, we invited our colleague and expert shopper Susan Feldman to help us cull the choices.
Feldman co-founded One Kings Lane and launched a community for women over 50 called In the Groove. What she loves for summer are the shoes of Basque revolutionaries and Picasso wannabes: espadrilles. This pompom espadrille is like a party for your feet.
Another thing she’s got her eye on this season: what she calls the ugly-sandal trend. “Suddenly, after a decade of collecting Birkenstocks, I’m fashion-forward,” says Feldman. This season’s hard-to-look-at but easy-to-wear Birkie dopelganger is fantastic with tortoiseshell buckles. For dressier occasions, Feldman says, we can’t ignore the barely there sandal trend. Nude is flattering on the foot and goes with everything.
Here are 10 of Feldman’s favorite pairs.
Sam Edelman’s cutout slide comes in metallics, suedes, and patent leathers ($89).
Shimmer through summer in silver Birkenstocks ($135).
A double-strap sandal by Everlane works with dresses on down ($145).
Rag & Bone’s elevated take on the espadrille goes anywhere ($395).
You’ll be off to the races — very comfy — in Suicoke’s checkerboard nylon sandals ($195).
A basic wedge from Everlane goes from the pool to the barbecue to a night out with ease ($165).
Totally flat, these Madewell sandals are still all that ($59.)
Comfort comes in a rainbow of colors — and as this Madewell stacked-heel mule ($138).
Put a bow on it with Raye’s ankle-tie number ($158).
Sporty meets stylish in a black Vince pair ($195).
