It’s no secret that I am passionate about exercise and movement. At 62, I #movefor fitness — to keep my body strong, flexible, and in optimal shape as I age.
But there are days when I don’t want to work out hard. Like most people, there are times when a run sounds like too much or I feel too tired to lift heavy weights. Still, on those days, I do want to move. I like to get outside and get my blood flowing. It’s what’s called active recovery. And as much as I love a sweaty gym session, I cherish the days when I can just move, breathe, and meditate at the beach near my home.
Key to making the most of movement no matter where I am are comfortable shoes, especially if I’m going to walk a few miles. So when Easy Spirit reached out and asked me to try their walking shoes, I was delighted to give them a try. And after wearing them for a good hour while I enjoyed the outdoors, my feet still felt great.
Through many years of working with trainers, I’ve learned lots of #easytips. Here, I share a few with you.
Even on an easy day, I like to work up a sweat, and a fast-paced walk gets my heart rate up. If there are no hills in your neighborhood — there aren’t in mine — go a couple of miles to make it worthwhile.
Every 15 to 20 minutes, I stop and do a stretch or a few yoga poses. It feels so good to just stretch my muscles, and flexibility is crucial as we age. Try to hold your stretches for 30 seconds each.
At the end of my walks I will do some side-to-side lunges and pushups and tricep dips to tone my muscles. For each move you choose, do 15 to 20 reps.
My last tip? Always choose the right gear for whatever activity you do. The right shoes can make all the difference in how far you go.
Staying fit is one thing that keeps me going and makes me happy. Exercise and movement don’t always have to be extreme. Easy days give me a chance to really get in touch with my body and stay grateful for my health.
In other words, I #movefor me. What do you #movefor?
