A few of our friends are facial fiends, and they love to post pictures of themselves on Instagram. After seeing one photo of a friend with a frozen orb being rolled across her face and another with a red light shining across her forehead, the fear of missing out crept in and curiosity won out.
That’s when we consulted with Ana Trissan, a physician’s assistant at Bowes Dermatology in Miami, and Sharee Sargent, master aesthetician and director of education for Spa Tech Institute in Plymouth, Massachusetts, about the best facials for women over 45.
Here’s what they recommend.
What it is: A vitamin infusion that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and hyperpigmentation — and leaves skin with a glow.
How it works: After microdermabrasion to remove the outermost layer of skin cells, a formula of vitamin C and vitamin A is applied to the face.
How long it takes to see results: Results are immediate and last a week or two with good at-home skin care.
What it is: A hefty application of collagen aids in moisture loss and smooths fine lines and wrinkles.
How it works: After a thorough exfoliation, a collagen cream mask is applied to the face. Once that’s removed it’s followed by a collagen moisturizer.
How long it takes to see results: Results are instant and last about a week. If collagen-based products are added to your skin care routine, results may last up to three weeks. Regular collagen facials can slow the degradation of your skin’s natural collagen.
Enzyme or Vitamin Peel
What it is: This is a gentle alternative to a chemical peel.
How it works: After a deep cleansing and toning, alpha hydroxy acids or vitamin C is applied to skin under steam for about 10 minutes. The enzyme dissolves dead skin cells on the surface, improving skin’s texture for a brighter and smoother look. This is followed by a serum mask and moisturizer.
How long it takes to see results: Results are instant and last about a month.
What it is: According to the American Society of Facial Esthetics, “Thermage is a nonexfoliating facial rejuvenation technique designed to tighten and improve the contours of the face and neck.”
How it works: A radiofrequency device is passed over the face to heat up the lower layers of the skin, causing existing collagen to expand and stimulating production of new collagen. Then a collagen serum and moisturizer are applied.
How long it takes to see results: A noticeable change takes three to six months, but results are said to last six months or longer.
