Love Indian food? Then you probably already love turmeric.

The superfood is having a moment, thanks to “wellness lifestyle” celebrities — think picture-perfect lattes, spiked juices, even skin care! — but its popularity dates back way before the days of Instagram. This culinary spice, which is a close relative to the ginger root, has been used both in cooking and medicinally for centuries, and it is a staple in the ayurvedic community.

The Benefits

Turmeric’s power comes from curcumin, its active ingredient (which is also responsible for the spice’s vibrant hue). Curcumin is widely recognized in the scientific community as well as by ayurvedic practitioners for its anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it a favorite among people with arthritis, many of whom report it to be just as successful in alleviating pain and joint swelling as over-the-counter meds.

The best part about turmeric? It’s easy to sprinkle on anything! Curry dishes and other Indian cuisine are the obvious choices, but you can also add it to salads for a peppery kick, warm almond milk for a coffee alternative, even into orange juice for an unconventional twist on a breakfast classic.
