Nutritional Spotlight: Biotin

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is a part of what’s called the “B vitamin complex” that helps turn food into energy for the body. Most of us typically get enough biotin from a balanced diet, but this is one of those magical vitamins that can prove to be pretty powerful if we amp up our intake.

The Benefits

If you’re already familiar with the word biotin, it’s probably because you’ve seen it lining the shelves in the beauty aisle. As we age, hair and nails become weaker and more brittle. Studies (and our own personal use!) have shown that taking high doses of biotin can help reverse the damage, making thin hair and cracked nails strong and healthy again.

And if your hair is starting to fall out? It can even help prevent hair loss. This makes it a popular addition to shampoos, nail polishes, and other beauty products.

The Best Bets

Although you can get your biotin while you suds up in the shower, people serious about reaping its benefits should eat their way to healthier hair and nails by consuming things like eggs, organ meats (think liver and heart), avocado, fish, cauliflower, and berries.
