Beauty Secret: Origins Maskimizer

Who would have thought you’d need a prep step for a face mask? Yet here’s Origins Maskimizer face mask primer scratching a skin care itch you didn’t know you had.

Sometimes when you treat yourself to your favorite facial mask, skin feels tight and dry the minute you remove the mask. This primer mist, enriched with hydrating red algae, locks in moisture as your mask does its work, as well as after you’ve wiped it away. No more uncomfortably taut skin; instead, you can actually move your mouth without feeling like you’re going to tear your face.

The red algae also helps the mask spread more evenly — which, if you’re a face-mask devotee, you know can be a challenge. By their very nature, masks tend to apply patchy, which means active ingredients aren’t distributed evenly across your skin. The idea of this primer is to remedy that.

Here’s how to use it: After washing your face, close your eyes and mist the refreshing primer over your skin. Be sure to hold the spray 10 to 12 inches away from your face — any closer and you will drench yourself (trust us). Then lightly pat in the primer with your fingers. Follow with your mask.

One caveat: Origins Maskimizer face mask primer is not meant for use with peel-off masks, so skip it when you opt for one.

Available at origins.com, $22.
