Nutritional Spotlight: L-Glutamine

A building block of protein, L-glutamine is considered the superstar of the body’s 20 amino acids. The most common amino acid in the body (60 percent of the body’s total amino acid population!), it plays a major part in eliminating toxins from the body, enhancing the immune system, and even creating other amino acids.

The Benefits

Often referred to as an anti-aging supplement, L-glutamine has two notable benefits: gut health and muscle repair. A healthy gut is directly related to a healthy immune system, and as we age and our immune systems become more fragile, it’s essential we keep our guts in tip-top shape. L-glutamine has been proven to help heal ulcers, improve IBS, and even rebuild and repair the intestinal walls after years, even decades, of damage from processed foods and a lackluster diet.

As for the second benefit, athletes love L-glutamine for good reason. Not only does this amino acid promote muscle growth, but it also prevents muscle deterioration. Whether you’re hitting the gym on the regular or just trying to maintain the strength you’ve got, this supplement can work wonders for anyone at any age — but is especially important for women over 50 who want to hang on to every little bit of muscle they can!

The Best Bets

Our team keeps a bottle of Solgar L-glutamine capsules around at all times. As always, consult your doctor or naturopath for the dosage that’s right for you.
