Nutritional Spotlight: Glucosamine

Got a spring in your step? You’ve got glucosamine to thank.

Glucosamine is an amino compound found in our joints. Made of sugars and proteins, it lubricates joints and acts as a natural shock-absorber — and not just when it comes to activities like running or jumping. Think back to physics class: Every single time we come into contact with anything, we’re creating small but substantial impact. Without glucosamine, our bones and muscles would take quite a beating just by our getting up in the morning.

The Benefits

As we age and joints start to deteriorate, it’s essential to create a buffer so our bodies can move with ease. Glucosamine to the rescue! Studies have shown that glucosamine supplements can help reduce joint pain, lower inflammation, and even help rebuild tissue and strengthen the skeleton after injuries. This makes it ideal for anyone suffering from arthritis or osteoporosis.

The Best Bets

Glucosamine sulfate is the compound that’s naturally found in our bodies, and it can be obtained by supplementing with a capsule or powder. We love blending NOW Foods joint support powder into our smoothies or taking a capsule when we’re not whipping out the blender. There’s currently no recommended dosage, but many people see benefits when they take upward of 500 milligrams. As always, we recommended consulting with your doctor to find what’s right for you.

Another delicious way to get in your glucosamine? Bone broth. (Nope, it’s not just a hipster trend.) Many natural food markets and high-end butchers now sell bone broth. You can even have it delivered. Feeling ambitious? Try making your own at home.
