This month’s guest, 46-year-old Escape to Shape founder Erica Gragg travels constantly for work. She spends lots of time on airplanes and changes climates endlessly. And though those things can wreak havoc on the skin, Gragg still radiates good health. Here she reveals how she gets glowing skin, no matter where her travels take her.
The key to an effective beauty routine is consistency, which can be challenging on the road. I aim to keep my routine simple enough that I can stick to it every day yet effective enough that it makes a difference. Many of my go-to products are things I’ve picked up in my travels through the years, but luckily most are now available in the United States.
Although the products I use vary depending on if I am at home or on the road, I keep my routine consistent, focusing on cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, as well as vitamins, sunscreen, and a healthy lifestyle.
Cleanse and Tone
When I’m at home, I use a cleanser called C-Quence Cleanser from Environ. It’s a South African brand of which I’m a fan. All of their products are high in vitamin A, which encourages skin cell production and helps keep skin firm and healthy. On the road I use CeraVe. It’s simple yet effective, with no dyes or fragrances. It leaves my skin clean and soft.
The French are known for their beauty secrets, so it’s no coincidence that one of my favorite products is from French brand Biologique Recherche. The Lotion P50 V (which is more like a toner than a traditional lotion) is a cult beauty favorite that both exfoliates and balances the skin. Touted as a miracle in a bottle by many, it goes with me wherever I go.
Nourish and Moisturize
Next, I apply Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, a powerful antioxidant serum containing vitamins C and E. I follow that with Environ C-Quence, which combines vitamins A and C with an effective hydrator to keep skin supple.
Protect and Hydrate
Last, and most importantly: sunscreen. I never set foot outside without it, regardless of the weather. My current favorite is EltaMD, but I also love La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. I always apply sunscreen to my neck, shoulders, and chest in addition to my face.
I also recently discovered another product that I love, called Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist. I take it with me wherever I go, as it is the perfect pick-me-up in hot or humid climates. A combination of SPF 50, rosemary, and other herbs, it leaves skin protected and refreshed, with a matte finish. You just spray it on your face and body. It does not need to be rubbed in, which came in very handy recently while I was on safari in Botswana, when I didn’t want to put down my camera for a second!
Hydration is key to healthy skin, so I make sure to stay hydrated all through the day, especially when I fly. I aim to drink one large glass of water every hour at a minimum when I’m in the air, and then plenty more once I am on the ground. When I’m at home, I add a scoop of Collagen Replenish Powder to my water daily and eat collagen-building foods, such as fish, green leafy vegetables, berries, and carrots.
Move and More
Nothing gives a healthy glow like a brisk walk, a yoga class, some cardio, or circuit training. I do my best to make time to get my glow on, even if it means just a few minutes of jumping rope and some push-ups!
What else? At home I use Environ’s Intensive Revival Masque — which many call a face lift in a jar. It’s super powerful and packed with alpha hydroxy acid. It definitely leaves skin glowing.
When I’m on the road, I travel with Dr. Jart+ Water Replenishment sheet mask. Sheet masks are easy to travel with and great for a skin pick-me-up, especially after hours on an airplane. If space permits, I also pack Lotus Knot Pure Natural Rose Water Skin Tonic, which not only smells delicious, but it also hydrates and soothes the skin, balances pH levels, and boosts collagen to improve skin texture.
